Building
your Links
When
we talk about Building links, we are referring to increasing the
number of links through to your website from other sites and, in
most cases, the quality of these links is far more important than
the quantity.
Spending
time to increase the number of links through to your website is
important for two principal reasons:
1.
You are likely to receive more visitors as people follow the link
from another website or directory through to your own website;
2.
A link through to your website is judged as an endorsement of
the site and so is used by Search Engines as one of the factors
which influences their ranking of your site on their Results pages.
With
regard to this second element, not all links to your site have the
same weight. In fact, there are three main factors which influence
the weight or importance of the link to your website:
- the
popularity (PageRank in Google terms) of websites linked to yours;

the relevance of the content of those websites to yours; and

the anchor text used (the words which you click on).
The
benefit of a highly regarded website working in the same field as
you which links to you using one of your KeyWords is worth more
than 20 general links from non related websites.
While
you are building the links to your site, you should be aware that
there are many links page generation scams and link pyramid schemes
where website owners agree to add your link to a generic links page
and you agree to publish the same links page as them. Search engines
can spot this scam and could penalise or blacklist your site if
you were to be a participant.
