Content
of your Website
After
you have gone through the all important phase of deciding what your
objectives are for the website, you should be able to determine
how you wish to achieve the objectives that you have set and consequently
what you want your website to contain.
This
will involve decisions on the general format of the website in terms
of the functionality that it should offer (ie. does it need to hold
an online catalogue for your ecommerce site or a database for a
major support section) as well as the information it should contain
on your company and the products that you produce.
In addition,
there are certain other pages which should be included, either to
facilitate the overall ease of use of the website or to cover certain
possible legal requirements. Some of these are:
Contact
Page
The main purpose of a website is encourage visitors or customers
to communicate with you and the most basic way to do this is to
have a dedicated contact page. This will contain your main contact
details including ideally your address (and a map and directions
on how to find you), main contact number and principal contact email
addresses. Ideally it will also include an online contact form which
can be completed and sent automatically to a specified email address.
Privacy
Policy
If you are collecting information about visitors to your website,
either through a form which they fill in or through a tracking system
which follows their IP address for example, then you must have a
Privacy Policy which states exactly how you will be using that information.
Terms
and Conditions
Equally,
you should also consider having a Terms and Conditions statement
covering the use of your website. This is more important if you
are expecting a lot of visitors from outside of the UK where perhaps
the content of your website may not be received in the same way
as in the UK and could contravene local laws.
Site
Map
A site map is a useful method of helping visitors quickly navigate
their way around your website once it gets to a size where all pages
are not quickly accessible via the main navigation links you have.
In addition, a site map can greatly aid the important indexing of
your website by Search Engines by allowing the automatic bots quick
access to all of your pages, thus reducing the time required to
index the whole site.
