Popular
Misconceptions
There
are unfortunately some popular misconceptions when it comes to creating
and promoting websites which can cause concern if not dealt with
upfront:
1.
Build your website and visitors will come
It is
wrongly believed that if you build a website then automatically
potential customers will be able to find it and will arrive at your
website. Unfortunately this is not the case - there are approximately
5 billion websites in the world all vying for attention. To make
sure that people can find your website you will need to look at
promoting it both online using methods such as Website
Optimisation (or SEO), Search
Advertising (PPC) and Email
Marketing methods, as well as offline with adverts, printed
material and directories among others.
2.
Flash based websites are better
The
best websites are ones that achieve the goals for which they are
created, whether that is informing people, selling to them or just
displaying information. To achieve any of these goals, they also
need to be easily found. Over 80% of the time, people find new websites
through Search engines which find and index your site according
to the subject matter that it contains. Unfortunately, however,
the automated programs which do this can only index text and cannot
see the flash pictures so therefore will ignore them when ranking
the websites. To cover all requirements, a website needs to be both
aesthetically pleasing to its human visitors and easily indexed
by its electronic ones!
3.
Build the website and then leave it
For
a website to be truly effective, it must have the ability to encourage
people to visit it time and time again. To achieve this, it needs
to be continuously updated to ensure that there is always a good
reason for people to visit it again. Ideally, a person within your
organisation needs to be in control of making sure that changes
and updates occur on a regular basis. If this option is too expensive
or the updates simply are not happening due to time pressure, then
it is possible to set up a Website
Management or Website
Maintenance arrangement with many web design companies so that
this important task can get the time and attention it requires.
